FAQS: FAQ

What is Psychotherapy?

Psychotherapy is also known as "Talk Therapy."

A talk therapy is a unique and healing professional relationship between a therapist and a client where the therapist responds to the client's feelings, thoughts and actions in a way that facilitates client's self-discovery, self-acceptance and resilience to deal with his/her life issues.

It provides a space where client gets support to address life's challenges that are getting in the way of living a normal, contented and satisfying life.

It also gives a reassurance to client that he/she has the strength and ability to handle problems.

A therapist rarely gives advice. Rather he/she helps and supports clients to explore themselves and find their own answers.

Counseling VS Psychotherapy?

The words counseling and psychotherapy are generally used interchangeably. But there are some subtle differences between the two.

Knowledge of the differences between the two will help you to make an informed decision to choose between the two.

  • Counseling is a short-term process. Usually surface issues are addressed by focusing on here and now. The aim is mostly to modify targeted behaviour.

  • Psychotherapy is a long term process. Deep-seated issues are addressed by focusing on there and then. The aim is personality reconstruction by exploring the past.

When to Seek Professional Help?

Here is a list of a few signals for you to decide to take professional help-

  • You want to know, and explore yourself.

  • You are in life’s transition phase and want to equip yourself for the new challenges.

  • You are confused and not able to make decision regarding career, job, or relationships.

  • You feel sad, angry or hopeless most of the time and you are not able to cope with it.

  • You have started eating and sleeping more than or less than usual and you don’t find strength to break this pattern.

  • You have withdrawn yourself from family and friends and are no longer interested in activities you used to enjoy earlier.

  • You are not able to focus on your work and take decisions.

  • You have started taking leaves form your work for no specific reasons.

  • You are self-medicating or consuming alcohol to feel better.

  • You are experiencing grief due to breakup, separation, divorce or death of someone important.

  • You have experienced abuse, neglect or some other negative experience from which you haven’t fully recovered.

  • You have faced a traumatic event like, accident, natural calamity, chronic illness etc. that has caused major change in your life.

  • You are in a conflicting and unhappy relationship.

Process of Psychotherapy?

After you schedule your appointment for psychotherapy, your first session would be an intake session. In this session you will share your concerns with your therapist and then both of you will collaboratively decide the goals of the psychotherapy. Usually you will have one weekly session of approximately 45 minutes.

The total number of sessions to address any issue may vary. Some clients need only one session, others a few sessions to achieve their goals; others may require months of psychotherapy.

In order to clarify the problem areas more comprehensively, and to ascertain your progress in the sessions, your therapist may administer some psychological assessment tools. Therapist will review all assessment results with you.

For therapy to be most effective you must be an active participant, both during and between the sessions. People seeking psychotherapy are willing to take responsibility for their actions, work towards self-change and create greater awareness in their lives.

Here are some things you can expect out of therapy-

  • Real strategies for enacting positive change.

  • Self-compassion, respect and understanding.

  • Perspectives to illuminate negative patterns & feelings.

  • Effective and proven techniques along with practical guidance.

How Will Psychotherapy Help Me?

Psychotherapy will benefit you but a lot depends on your participation.

Psychotherapy is a process of personal exploration. It is important that you take an active role in it.

Your personal exploration may lead to major changes in your life. Together you and your therapist will work to achieve the best possible results for you.
