Big & Tricky Feelings, Secret Missions: Inside the CBT Workbook Helping Kids Decode Emotions

Updated: Jul 22

Some days, being a child can feel like being inside a storm.

Tears, tantrums, tummy aches, big feelings often show up unannounced.

As a CBT therapist and author, I’ve worked closely with parents who want to support their children but feel lost in the emotional overwhelm. They wonder:

  • Why is my child overreacting?

  • How do I teach them emotional control without making it feel like a lecture?

  • Is there a way to make therapy tools child-friendly?

This is exactly what led to the creation of “Feeling Decoder: An Agent in Training Workbook.”

The Problem: Big & Tricky Emotions, Little Tools

Many kids feel deeply. But don’t yet have the words or skills to explain what’s going on inside.

Traditional approaches often rely on adult instructions:

“Use your words.”

“Calm down.”

“Don’t be angry.”

But what if children had their own language, a secret code to understand and manage emotions?

That’s where the Agent Training concept comes in.

Meet the Agent-in-Training

In this workbook, your child is not just a learner. They’re a secret agent- on a mission to decode emotions, uncover hidden thoughts, and respond wisely.

Their journey begins with:

  • A personal Agent ID

  • A visual map of their emotional training path

  • A Secret Oath that encourages them to listen to their thoughts and feelings rather than fight them

From there, the missions unfold: Decode Big Feelings like anger, sadness, fear, and excitement. Crack the case of Tricky Feelings like jealousy, embarrassment, guilt, or grief. Complete activities based on real CBT tools:

Identifying thoughts, feelings, and actions

Why CBT, and why now?

CBT (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy) is one of the most evidence-based approaches to emotional regulation. But let’s be honest, it isn’t exactly child-friendly in its textbook form.

That’s why this workbook translates CBT into:

  • Playful missions

  • Story-based activities

  • Agent-themed reflection tools

No lectures. No boring worksheets. Just feel-it-to-heal-it tools disguised as secret training.
